Poetry Contest 2011
August 2010
Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to announce
that our first annual French
Poetry Contest will take place on February 26, 2011 at the Monterey Institute of
International Studies. This competition is open to students from universities
and from public or private middle schools and high schools on the Monterey
Peninsula and Salinas.
It is important to note that
there will be two distinct competitions:
1)
Recitation of poems in French
from the canon of French or francophone literature. Winners will be announced
and awarded prizes at the close of the event on February 26.
2)
Original poems in French
penned by the students. Candidates
in this category will be requested to submit their poems by February 5, and honorees will be invited to read or recite their
winning poems at the same event.
Students may participate in both competitions; a separate enrollment form must
be filled out for each competition.
There will be three
categories: Middle School, High School, University, and three levels of competition within each category:
1) Novice :
first-year students
2) Intermediate :second or third-year students
3) Advanced :
fourth-year students or beyond
Native speakers, if
there are any, will be judged
separately.
The criteria for awarding prizes for the recitations will be: pronunciation, interpretation (subtext) and stage presence.
The criteria for awarding prizes for the original poems will be: poetic quality and originality;
correct syntax, grammar and spelling (teacher guidance in this respect is appropriate).
In each category, three
prizes at each level will be awarded for
the recitation of poems, as well as
three prizes at each level for original poems. The
first prize will consist of a trophy and a book ; the second and third prizes
will consist of a trophy. Additionally a certificate will be awarded to every
participant
Other important, pertinent
data:
* for
the recitation contest, All poems must be recited by heart (with interpretation) and not simply read
aloud.
In order to ensure
quality participation, teachers are encouraged to select students for this contest, perhaps by organizing competitions
within their own classes.
Upon request, we will
send interested educators a list of suggested poems.
All poems, both original
ones by students as well as those written by famous poets, must be limited in
length : no more than 40 lines
Poems in the form of
dialogue (e.g. Le Corbeau et le Renard
by La Fontaine) or poems with
multiple voices may be performed by 2 or more students, and they may use a
reasonable number of props.
The panel of judges will consist of eminent Alliance Fran aise members
(professors, poets, etc.).
Teachers are encouraged to
accompany their students to the event. Parents and/or friends are cordially invited.
You will be advised in due
time of the room number at MIIS where the contest will take place, and the
precise time at which it will start.
The deadline for
registering your students is
January 22, 2011.
There is no limit to the
number of qualified students who may enter. Please make as many copies of the
registration form as you need, fill them out and mail them to us before
the due date. We will not be able to accept forms received after January 22
, as we need to know the exact number of participants in order to reserve the
appropriate venue.
The deadline for
submitting original poems by students is February 5, 2011.
Please do not hesitate to

Cordially yours,
