About the Federation


Our mission

The Federation of Alliances Françaises USA is organized around the following goals:
• To support and encourage Member Chapters in their promotion of the language and culture of French speaking peoples.
• To promote an increased understanding of the French language, literature, history and culture among people in the United States; to encourage cultural exchange and mutual understanding between French-speaking countries and the United States; and to interface with the Alliance Française de Paris, the Delegation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cultural Services of the French Embassy, and other interested partners and institutions.
• To publish, circulate, create, promote, manufacture or otherwise develop books, pamphlets, bulletins, brochures, presentations on film, video or audio tape, or any current technology, in any way related to the abovementioned objectives of the Federation.
• To provide assistance to Member Chapters, individually and collectively, in any way possible in the designing, publication, promotion or development of appropriate books, pamphlets, bulletins, brochures, presentations on film, video or audio tape, or any current technology, in any way related to the above-described objectives of the Federation.
• To maintain a mutually co-operative working relationship with the Delegation.
• To be part of the worldwide family of Alliances Françaises; the Federation acknowledges that the Alliance Française de Paris is the heart of this network (Coeur du reseau).
• To purchase, lease or otherwise acquire property, real or personal, to contract for goods or services, to hire employees, to borrow monies and to do any and all other acts necessary and incidental to the performance of any of the aforementioned purposes.
• To be operated for educational, scientific and charitable purposes to the extent, but only to the extent, allowed by Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, the purposes set forth in the preceding clauses (a) - (g) being limited by reference to such educational, scientific and charitable purposes; and in furtherance thereof no part of the net earnings of the Federation shall inure to the benefit of any private individual.

Board members serve for 3-year terms, renewable once, and are elected during the Federation's Annual Meeting. Member chapters wishing to nominate a person to the board should contact the Federation office.
