"Mary Cassatt in France"


Susan Courtney is an actress (Equity, SAG-AFTRA), director, theatre professor and playwright. Her full-length play, "Girl In Blue Armchair" about the American impressionist, Mary Cassatt, was developed at the Actors Studio Playwright/Directors Workshop in NYC. She holds an M.A. in Theatre from NYU and has taught classes in Acting and Theatre History at Westchester Community College, Croton Academy of Arts, and various schools in Westchester and NYC. She has lectured and read from her play though the New York Arts Exchange and has recounted her adventures in researching Cassatt's life in "Looking for Mary Cassatt", Fine Art Connoisseur, 2007.


"Mary Cassatt in France" Susan Courtney will speak about the American artist, Mary Cassatt,and her journey to becoming a professional artist in a strict academic system that was opposed to women artists. Susan will share her own history in working on her play, "Girl In Blue Armchair" which portrays Mary's struggle to be an artist in Paris in the late 1800's and the influence of her family and her mentor, Edgar Degas, on Mary's life and art. Images will be shown of Mary's work,her various residences in Paris and Mesnil-Theribus, present-day Cassatt family members, as well as video clips of Susan's play.
