So Let’s Learn French:
Knowing a world language is more important than ever! American students of all ages lag in world language skills and cultural understanding, both of which could hamper their success in a globally competitive world. Here is an opportunity to gain cross cultural competence with foreign language skills and international knowledge. Be part of the 21st Century with thanks to today’s technology and the know-how of the partnership of the Federation of Alliances Françaises and Middlebury Interactive Languages.

Pick Your Course:
  • Middlebury Interactive French 1; a debutante level course equivalent to French Level A1.
  • Middlebury Interactive French 2; this follow on will be available starting in the Fall of 2012, and will be equivalent to French Level A2.
  • Power Speak Advanced Placement [AP] French for more fluent speakers.
Middlebury’s immersion methodology challenges students to learn to use the language as if they were studying abroad. The coursework is based on the sights, sounds and experiences of being immersed with native speakers. The course is divided into two semesters, each consisting of 90 hours of instruction. This is a totally virtual product with the enhancement of virtual instructors who offer the following instruction:

Each week, according to a predetermined calendar, each teacher holds an open “Conversation Café”. These sessions are held online through Elluminate/Blackboard Connect and are a half hour in length. Students from any level and any class can attend any session in the language they are learning. A student can go to the session his/her teacher is conducting, or to a session created by a different teacher if it better meets scheduling needs. Students can attend as often as there are appropriate sessions available in a week.

In the sessions no logistics or grammar lessons are covered—these sessions are dedicated to using the language orally. Teachers brainstorm vocabulary according to prepared prompts, and provide guidance for communication that is meaningful to students. Teachers also hold weekly office hours and do tutorials online as needed, to provide students a way to discuss course navigation, difficult lesson elements, etc., and archived sessions on specific grammar topics are available for students needing extra help.

As Middlebury Interactive Languages, LLC, is an accredited school and meets with the agreed upon standards with the accreditation agency, credit is available for these courses.

What can the program do for my chapter?
If you are teaching an Alliances Françaises chapter, consider the addition of an e-learning program to your current curriculum. Who is your audience?
  • Young Professionals
  • “Stay at home Moms”
  • Business people on the road
  • Retirees
  • Francophiles with a “yearning” to speak French
They are your audience because you are offering them the chance to learn at their own pace. No matter what course or level they choose to follow, their time to study is at their personal discretion.

If you are a smaller Alliances Françaises chapter with no classroom facility nor budget to pay for a teaching component, here is your opportunity to offer e-learning to the same constituency and not only increase revenue but further your mandate to foster French language and culture.

ALL chapters have the opportunity to reach out to suburban communities that are just too far beyond the commuting circle and may have a “ready audience’ for the course.

How about your high school student at home? If he/she is having difficulty keeping up, this is a great tool for tutoring! Set up a class after school with a few laptops and let them use the course to improve their skills.

Use your imagination…!

How Do I Sign Up?
If you are a member (in good standing) of a Chapter of The Federation of Alliances Françaises USA, we invite you to join in this 21st Century offering. Middlebury will have a member list of all Alliances Françaises Chapters so that your student can indicate which chapter holds his/her membership.

The enrollment cost per semester is $329. Thus you are completing a full year, 180 hours of instruction, in two semesters for a total cost of $658. Member Chapters may not increase, decrease or alter in any way the price of the course.

Members of an Alliances Françaises Chapter will receive a $50 revenue share per student per semester, which will be paid within 60 days of the end of each calendar quarter. The Federation of Alliances Françaises will maintain the enrollment process and make the financial disbursements.
