The Federation of Alliances Françaises USA, founded in 1902, is a nonprofit organization representing more than 100 chapters in the United States.
The Fondation, located in Paris, is the headquarters of the international network of Alliances. Contact the Fondation if you’d like to propose starting a new Alliance Française chapter.
The Federation works in close coordination with the National Coordinator, who is based at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Based in Washington, D.C., the Embassy of France is the headquarters of the French diplomatic mission in the United States.
There are 10 Consulates General of France in major American cities, one being attached to the Embassy in Washington, D.C. Americans can contact the consulates with a variety of questions, for example, on visas.
L’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie fosters multilateral francophone cooperation to promote the French language, plurilinguisme, and cultural diversity.
All Alliance Française chapters have staff who can help you determine your level of French in order to place you into a particular class. Chapters all use a standard European reference grid, the Common European Framework of Reference, described here.
To get a preliminary idea of your level of French, you can do a free self-test available from TV5MONDE. The test is free and accurate with no strings attached. The site includes both practice exercises and the real-time test. Results are displayed immediately after you complete the test.
Many Alliance Française chapters are official test centers for standardized exams such as the DELF/DALF, TCF, and TEF, which may be required for entrance to French universities, employment, or immigration. Confused about which test to take? Click here for a good overview. Find testing centers here.
Alliance Française chapters can arrange for members to access Culturethèque, an extensive selection of online books, magazines and other resources in French. Contact your local Alliance Française chapter to get access to Culturethèque as part of your membership.
Available on cable and via Sling, TV5MONDE has an amazing offering for the francophile; most programming is subtitled in English.
France Media Group has a number of print magazines and online platforms that are enjoyed by Francophiles, including France Today, French Entrée, Bonjour Paris and more.
MEP is our top-recommended partner for books (including textbooks). Many Alliances order their books from MEP; in some cases students can also order their textbooks directly from MEP.
